KanWork is an outreach activity of the UPM-Cornell Collaborative Cancer Education and Research Project (CaEd) that aims at providing support and information for people diagnosed with breast cancer, those interested in or undergoing or has undergone treatment options (e.g. lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) and those interested or taking care of cancer-diagnosed family member or friend.<\/p>\n

KanWork hopes to improve cancer awareness among Malaysians through local and culturally appropriate educational programs. KanWork strives to empower cancer survivors by building up their self-confidence, which can suffer a severe blow from the weakness or disability that cancer can bring.<\/p>\n

Research has shown that support groups help reduce the three most significant stressors associated with cancer: unwanted aloneness, loss of control and loss of hope. Other than our educational mission, as a support group, KanWork provides the needed support by letting people affected by cancer learn that they are not alone. The most important and amazing thing about a support group is the sense of genuine community and belonging. KanWork aims to provide that safe and comfortable space where each survivor will realise that they are there for each other and that they make good listeners.<\/p>\n

To date, the group has 150 members. The group had been having its monthly session at the Putrajaya Hospital since May 2004. Beginning 2007, the support group grew to meet the needs of increasing number of members. Buttressed by office space provided by Universiti Putra Malaysia, KanWork is gradually establishing its presence in the community.<\/p>\n
