SMKS 24 telah mula beroperasi sebagai sekolah menengah di Seksyen 24 mulai Disember 1993. Dengan 41 orang tenaga pengajar,
seramai kira-kira 800 pelajar ditempatkan di sekolah ini pada awal pembukaannya.
Kos pembiayaan adalah di bawah Bank Dunia melibatkan RM4 juta.
